Move Over Roller, Mine's A Mondeo

05/05/2006

The family run-around has outshone the flashy roller as the car blushing brides are most likely to ride to church in on their big day.

Its familiarity and the calming influence of a relative behind the wheel drove the trusty motor into first place.

Hot on its heels was the classic Rolls-Royce, with its swanky style, sumptuous interior and silky smooth ride.

The prestigious Bentley completed the top three wedding cars in the poll of 2,000 people by Churchill Car Insurance.

A frugal 5 per cent ditched the car and donned their trainers to walk to church and a flash few chose a chopper to transport them to the aisle.

More unusual vehicles included a milk float, vintage bus and a tractor. A disorganised few even had to hail a black cab to get them to the church on time.

But if any mode of transport in the world was on offer, brides wouldn’t go for a classic car - 25 per cent of women opted for a romantic horse and carriage.

Kitt from Knight Rider, a pink stretch Cadillac and a Harley Davidson were also high on the dream list.

And when it comes to colour, a tasteful 40 per cent of brides put white as the top shade for their car, with black, silver and gold coming next in the paint poll.

But, the marital motor remains low in the wedding budget pecking order - only 10 per cent of couples put the car above the photographer, food and venue.

An economical 25 per cent of bride and grooms even confessed to getting their wedding car for free.

Frances Browning, spokesperson, Churchill Car Insurance said: “Weddings are such an expensive outlay and most couples now have to fund the big day themselves. As they have to stick to tight budgets, it’s not surprising that brides and grooms to be, are cutting back where they can.”
