The Department of Transport have reported that the public believe smaller increases in speed will not have the same repercussions as larger ones.
Research showed that over 70% of drivers in one study admitted to speeding (Stradling) and in other studies (Webster & Wells) the figure was 85%. Drivers still believe there is a difference between 'ordinary, safe speeding drivers' and 'dangerous speeding drivers'. Speeding is almost approved of by many who believe they can handle it, that it's often necessary, and they enjoy it. One study showed that driving at 40mph in a 30mph zone was seen as more acceptable than dropping litter (TNS).
Being caught speeding can result in fines and penalty points on driving licences, and UK car insurance companies can re-enforce this by increasing your premium. In addition, more serious speeding offences can result in driving bans and possible prison sentences.
So if you’re on the look out for cheaper UK car insurance – make sure you stick to the speed limit.
